House_5_005

Construction is underway on the latest SUSTAIN house project  — a custom designed residence for outdoorsman Joey Mines.  The home, being built by ACCMS construction, is located in Lagrange, Georgia on the shores of beautiful West Point Lake.  Located within The Settings of West Point Lake, the home will showcase sustainable materials throughout.

Each week construction segments will be aired on Outdoors with Joey Mines to show ongoing progress of the home.  We will interview the material suppliers as well as the contractor and sub-contractors responsible for building the home.  The first segment will air on Saturday, April 4th.   Outdoors with Joey Mines is on 52 weeks on FOX SPORTS NET SOUTH Saturdays @ 10:30 AM EST and Thursdays @ 1:30 PM EST. The show is also on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on – MYOUTDOORTV.COM

Eco Principles

Fresh air and sunshine, blue skies and clean water.  These aren’t really things you think about when building a home. We think they should be.  The materials that are used to build your home create the environment that you will live in.  You’re careful about what you put into your body, so shouldn’t you be even more careful about what kind of environment you surround yourself with?

When you build a SUSTAIN house you can be assured you’re building with clean, high-quality natural materials made by companies and people just like you who care about protecting our natural resources.  But a SUSTAIN house is so much more than that.  We believe that the forms, materials, colors and lighting that create your home have a direct effect on your well-being.   And that’s something we’re just as committed to nourishing as we are to green living.

NISHIKIhouse

FeaturedNISHIKI

The dramatic lines of the NISHIKIhouse do little to underscore the warmth of the interior spaces.  Entering the foyer an organic Eykon textured wallcovering covers the floating wall, while random sized windows stream in constant, museum quality, north lighting .  The main living area is in the large rectangular wood form, and the wood doesn’t stop on the outside.  The interior walls and ceilings are 8″ horizontal wood with a chestnut stain, and contain many art niches and recessed bookcases.  The views extend from the front of the house to the rear of the house with large windows and 15′ high ceilings.  The living area has a recessed Eco Fuel fireplace with connections above for tv and equipment.  The large kitchen is designed for entertaining.  An island cooking area topped with ECO by Cosentino  is perfect for conversing with family and guests, while the rear worksurface has glass windows extending down to the countertops.  Side work areas have horizontal cabinets above for ample storage.  All appliances are Energy Star and all of the recessed light fixtures are LED which means with average use the lightbulbs can last 20 years!

Stepping down from the main living area is the dining room, with sliding doors that open onto a sunken garden facing a water feature that is fed from the rainwater collection system.

Just off the foyer, leading to the bedrooms, is the Relaxation Room — a concept pioneered by the architect in her work with spa and healthcare facilities.  The room has insulated walls to block out sounds, chromatherapy lighting that allows for adjustment of the color of the room via remote control, and wall mount locations for a flat panel television.  Built-in speakers, separate from the main audio system of the house, can provide an ambient music source.  The room is designed to hold a fully reclining massage chair.

The master suite and the two additional bedrooms all have french doors that open onto the landscaped outdoor terrace and reflecting pool.

ELMhouse

The ELMhouse proves that “square” doesn’t have to be a big box.  This design represents a challenge the architect gave herself to utilize the cost efficiency of a square building while creating a plan that is livable and unique.  Basic geometry dictates the house is less expensive to build due to minimized exterior wall surface.  The stair leading to the upper level is central, reducing hallways and giving more space to the upstairs bedrooms.

But aside from the design efficiencies, the house itself is a carefully crafted, striking play of geometries.  The chestnut stained wood canopy at the entry extends from the facade, all the way into the foyer where it turns vertical and goes down to the floor, providing a beautiful wood wall entry feature.  A library immediately off the entry has built-in bookshelves and desk space, as well as room for a pair of comfy club chairs for reading.  Windows to the front of the house look out to a reflecting pool, while windows into the covered entry view landscaped gardens.

The dining area also has views out to the reflecting pool as well as doors leading to a covered outdoor patio.  An adjustable patio cover in dark bronze means that the south facing patio can be open air, or with an adjustment of the roof via remote control the louvered roof panels close creating a watertight shelter.  Perhaps the most striking feature of the patio is the cascading water that, with a recirculating pump operating off the rainwater collection system, provides a semi-transparent and very unique privacy screen from the front yard.

The open kitchen has bar seating, a conversation cooking area, and beautiful ECO by Cosentino countertops.  All appliances are Energy Star, and all recessed light fixtures throughout the house are LEDs, meaning with average use the bulbs will last around 20 years!

The main living area is separated from the kitchen by a low wall with a recessed Eco Fuel fireplace and television connections for tv and equipment above.  Light floods into the kitchen and living areas via the large south facing windows that have a solar screening canopy to protect from harsh summer sun, while letting in the sun’s lower angled rays for passive solar heating in the winter.  The ceiling height in the living areas and kitchen is 15′, while all the other spaces on the main level are at 10′.

All of the bedrooms in the ELMhouse are located upstairs. The master suite has a large bathroom with a Kohler digital shower and a separate Bubblejet tub.  Dual vessel lavs sit on the ECO countertops, and there is a separate toilet room for privacy.

There are three additional bedrooms, one with a private bath ideal for a guest suite, and a shared bath for the other two.  The main laundry room is also located on this level.

CEDARhouse

CEDARhouse no logo

The CEDARhouse is our smallest design in the Modern Forest Series at 1,700 s.f.  Beautiful stained cedar exterior walls extend inside the house to Teragren wall panels for an abundance of interior woodwork.  The entry foyer is a nature lover’s dream, with large windows looking out to the reflecting pool at the front of the house and windows ahead leading into the family room.

An Eco Fuel fireplace is recessed into the chestnut colored wood walls, and the Kemiko stained concrete floors, with their mottled natural stone appearance, juxtapose nicely against the woodwork.   The large family room has plenty of seating areas as well as a built-in bookcase and desk.   Other than the wall panel for the fireplace and television, the exterior walls are primarily glass, providing excellent views to the outdoors.  The very large roof overhang is an architectural feature that provides sun shading during hot summer months while allowing winter sun to penetrate to the interior rooms for passive solar heating.

The kitchen has beautiful environmentally friendly cabinetry by Aya, topped with ECO by Cosentino countertops. The dining area has stacked stone exterior walls and a large picture window framing the view to the outdoors.

CEDARhouse has a master on the main level with french doors leading to a north facing private garden, and a large master bath with a Kohler digital showering system.  Two additional bedrooms are located upstairs, each with french doors leading to the rooftop deck.  A modular green grid roofing system means growing areas can easily be relocated on the roof to allow for customization of outdoor seating areas.

WILLOWhouse

WILLOWhouse no logo

Like the namesake willow tree, the WILLOWhouse shares a connection with water from the moment you walk in the door.  Entering the foyer either through the front door, or from the garage you will be looking through a picture window to the cascading waterfall just outside.   The water feature is made possible by a recirculating pump fed by the house’s rainwater collection system.  A reflecting pool runs along the side of the house, extending down the foyer and across the exterior wall of the expansive family room.   The house has stained concrete floors by Kemiko as a standard, with optional wood floors.  The kitchen opens into the family room and is meant for entertaining.  As with all our houses the cooktop is positioned in the “island” area, which means you can interact with friends and family while cooking instead of facing a wall.  Eco by Cosentino countertops juxtapose beautifully against the dark wood Aya cabinetry.  Energy Star appliances help you save on power bills, as do the recessed light fixtures.  All of the recessed lighting in the house operates off LED bulbs that are designed to fit a standard MR16 socket.  With average use these lightbulbs should last for 20 years, so changing bulbs in the WILLOWhouse will be a thing of the past.  The exterior of the family room has a ventless ECO fuel fireplace recessed into the wall with connections for a flat panel television and equipment recess above.  LED lighting in the reflecting pool just outside the window softly illuminates the water at night, creating soft reflections in the interior space.

The dining area has it’s own room that opens out onto an exterior patio with an herb garden, an outdoor kitchen, and a covered cabana with seating.   WILLOWhouse has 4 bedrooms, one of which is located on the first floor, making it easy to use as a media room, a home office, or a private guest suite.  The master bedroom and 2 additional bedrooms are located on the upper level.
